Many Banner Haven Guests visit Grandfather Mountain, which has two parts; the Grandfather Conservatory and Grandfather Mountain State Park, which was established in 1999.

Greg and Amy spent the day at the mountain and brought back these fantastic shots and a lot of information about the area.  Most people believe Grandfather Mountain is and has always been a state park, but that only became true in the last 15 years.  The mountain has been privately owned for several generations and activities there date back to the late forties and early fifties, when an annual car rally was held where racers drove the hairpin turn from bottom to top on some of the most dangerous roads in North Carolina.  The conservatory donated a large part of the property to the State of North Carolina in 1999, when Grandfather Mountain State Park was established.  Today the two parts act as one with the park caring for the largest part of the mountain, trails, and waterways and the conservatory maintaining operation of the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Animal Sanctuary and surrounding area.

Admission is under $20 and only $14 for youth.  A small price to pay for the exciting adventures available to visitors.

The views, even on bad days, are great and clear days provide glimpses of the Charlotte skyline, more than 80 miles away near the South Carolina state line.  Very little of the visible area is corroded with signs of development.  A houses dot the hills around the mountain and a few sections of a golf course can be seen, but most of the view is uncluttered with the debris of life.

The area has been well preserved and protected for past, present and future generations.

Below are a few photos Greg and Amy brought back today.  We hope you’ll come back and see more Grandfather pictures as they come in through the summer.
