As the temperatures dropped, snow blanketed Banner Elk and the North Carolina Highcountry.

Cold weather brought another boost to the Highcountry ski resorts as more than 15″ of new snow fell at Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Ski Resorts, bringing in large crowds for a weekend that normally doesn’t see large groups.  Sugar Mountain opened the whole mountain and covered every slope with deep snow as visitors started coming in Thursday afternoon.

While the new snow meant more business for everyone in Banner Elk, there are some that don’t look forward to winter and the “mess it brings”.   As today brought sunny skies and warmer temps, locals and visitors worked to free cars and trucks from several days of snow.

The beauty brings people from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and as far away as Texas.  The NC Highcountry is the first stop for anyone from the south, who might be looking for snow or skiing.

There are few places in the country that provide such a wonderfully diverse group of activities all year.  Besides the Carolinas, only California has skiing and surfing in the same day.

In addition to Banner Haven B&B, local businesses, like the Perry House and Azalea Inn, look forward to snow to bring in guests.  Our economy is based on tourism and the new means big dollars for Banner Elk and the surrounding areas, like Valle Crucis and Boone.

Life continues, as students from Lees McRae College and volunteers at the Banner Elk Chamber continue life as usual.

Don’t just come visit.  Come visit and stay for ever.  Banner Elk and the Highcountry are beautiful places to live, where taxes are reasonable, the real estate is affordable.

If you want to come visit, or you’re thinking about moving, give Greg and Amy a call – at Banner Haven Bed and Breakfast.

Light snow has returned and heavy snowmaking is on it’s way.  Snow making has started at Sugar and Beech Mountain Ski Resorts and is expected to continue part of the day and all of the night with possible snow making all day tomorrow, providing a great base with this weekend.

Snow making should continue each night this week and into the weekend, reopening parts of the mountain closed due to the recent warm temps.

In many years past, the mountains are only just opening and struggling to keep snow on the ground.  This year, Sugar Mountain has already been open for over 45 days and had some great skiing already.  In fact, if things continue the way they are, we’re set to have the longest ski season in NC history.

Lower sections of the mountain are not fairing so well and will need the next 24 hours just to recover enough for skiing.  As you can see from the photo, the bottom of Sugar Mountain has been hurt with the last few days of warm temps and rainy skies.

The snow and snow making should help the mountain get back to full main lift operations and reopen the mountain by Wednesday or Thursday.

If you’re planning a ski trip, remember the many bed and breakfasts in and around Banner Elk, like Banner Elk Bed and Breakfast.

The skiing is set to get better as all the slopes will be making snow next week.

Several cold days are headed our way and the snow making will start early next week, followed by an extremely busy ski weekend for Beech Mountain, Banner Elk, Boone and Sugar Mountain.  Lessons are already being booked.  Online tickets are selling fast.  Lodging is filling up.

Banner Elk is the best location for skiing at Beech and Sugar.  Only e couple miles either direction will put you at the highest skiing on the east coast.

Banner Elk Bed and Breakfast is serving skiers headed to both mountains or just up to see the area.
