Banner Haven Opens New Bedrooms

15 Tuesday May 2012

Although bedrooms in the main house have been occupied in the past, it’s been mostly friends and family of the innkeepers, Greg and Amy Gardner, as these rooms needed to be “livened up” just a bit.

The rooms have been redecorated, new beds, bedding, linens, towels, pictures and more.  The rooms have come to life with a few extra touches from Amy’s keen eye and decorating ideas.  In addition, Greg’s artistic flare keeps the rooms “alive” with towel animals to greet the guests, as they arrive.  Currently, only one animal is available for greeting; however, more will surely follow.

The largest of the rooms is the Banner Room, which has a king size bed and a private bath.  There’s enough room to sit at the window to enjoy the view, watch TV from the bed or sit in the room’s chairs.   The bed and hope chest are antiques, the latter being a family heirloom belonging to the Greg’s Grandmother.  The bedside table, like everything is the room, adds the character os real furniture made with pride, when heavy pieces of real wood were the norm instead of the cheap pressed wood we find so often today.

The bedding isn’t all that changed in this room.  The addition of an antique marble-top vanity sets the room off.

The smaller Haven Room has just as much charm and the furniture is equally beautiful.  The queen bed is another antique that’s been in the house for many years, but the Mahogany dresser was supplied by the Gardners and is almost as old as the house.  The skylights provide plenty of natural light.

Several options will be available, including table or chair massages, in-room massages, massages on the gazebo with a view of the Great Smoky Mountains or by the creek listening to the serene water falling over the rocks.

If you’re planning a visit and want to include a massage, please let Greg and Amy know, when booking the room.

What to do on a rainy day in Banner Elk

Small town life can be great.  Small towns can be tough, but the North Carolina High Country is packed with things to do; goof weather, fair weather, or bad weather.  It’s been raining all day but there’s always something to do.  Today it was another trip to Elk River Falls in Pisgah National Forest. Elk River Falls is a popular summer spot for locals, especially young people that like to jump off the rocks, as you can see from the photo above.  Unfortunately, people have died here but that doesn’t seem to stop other’s from taking the plunge from both sides of the falls.  The internet is full of videos of Elk River Falls Jumpers and information about people being hurt or killed, but every summer more people are on top of the falls, looking for that exhilarating plunge.  The Avery County dive team has recovered several bodies from beneath the falls, after jumps haven’t gone as planned. Aside from the tragedies, the falls are beautiful any time of year and a great place for a short walk through the woods, whether you’re day hiking, picnicking, bird watching or just looking for some solitude. Greg and Amy took a quick trip to the falls with Trudy Pope and Jamie Gardner, mother-in-law and son.  The rain came down steady all day but didn’t dampen the spirits of this great spot.  The falls are about 15 minutes from Banner Haven B&B and a great place for guests, friends, and family to visit when in the High Country. Hundreds of waterfalls for the mountains of North Carolina and are popular amount hikers photographers and others.  Elk River is one of the easiest to reach.  The trail rises about 50 feet from the parking lot, before dropping about 100 feet to the bottom of the falls. If you choose Elk River Falls or any other waterfall, be careful.  Waterfalls are beautiful but many waterfalls claim lives and hurt unsuspecting people every year.  Elk River is so easy to get to, it happens more here than some other places.

If you’re staying at Banner Haven or anywhere in the High Country, there are lots of beautiful waterfalls to checkout.  If you’re looking, checkout NCWaterfalls.com for a list and directions to North Carolina’s best waterfalls.  And … as always, if you’re looking for a place to stay, checkout Banner Haven for a relaxing B&B or cabin rental.

Today, Banner Haven hosted their first annual spring open house and the turnout was just as expected.

Neighbors, friends, family, other business owners, and others were among the people that visited the B&B.

Banner Elk Winery supplied a Banner Elk Red that was a great hit with everyone and Georgia McLean’s free chair massages were huge hit.  It seemed like everyone wanted to grab a glass of wine and relax in the massage chair.  On-Site Cigars rolled more than 150 free cigars that were taken home or smoked by many of the visitors.  Dunn’s Deli provided some great sub sandwiches that everyone seemed to enjoy.

Several Banner Elk Bed and Breakfast innkeepers were on hand to meet the newest people in town and take a look at Banner Haven.

In this photo, On-Site Cigars’ roller is doing a fine job rolling great cigars.

Next time you’re in the NC High Country, stop by for a visit of your own.  It may not be time for an open house, but something is always going on at Banner Haven.

Lot’s of people have emailed with questions about the cigar rolling.

On-Site Cigars, from Miami, is coming for a cigar rolling demonstration at Banner Haven – during tomorrow’s open house.  The roller will also be giving away free cigars.  The innkeepers realize this has nothing to do with a bed and breakfast, but Greg is a die hard cigar lover and used to own a cigar shop.

Wine has little to do with a bed and breakfast, but Banner Elk Winery is also going to be doing a wine tasting at the open house.

When these things come together, it makes for a great open house and everyone is invited.  Whether you’re local or driving distance, come up for a few hours and take a look around Banner Elk’s newest bed and breakfast, Banner Haven.

Boone NC is host to many bars, bands, concerts and events, but the Boone Service League has a great group playing at their annual fundraiser this years and if you like 6o’s music, it’s the place you should be this Friday.

It’s the Service League’s largest annual fundraiser, but this year, there’s a new twist.

Boone-based soul, funk and classic rock band Soul Benefactor will be inspiring attendees to dance the night away as if it were the 1960s all over again.

On Friday, May 11, the festivities begin at 7 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock with plenty of food, music, dancing, a cash bar, silent auctions and live auctions, featuring auctioneer Jenny Miller.

Hundreds of items are available at the silent auction, with plenty of bargains to be had. Items include restaurant gift certificates, overnight stays, “An Appalachian Summer” tickets, ski and tubing passes, pet supplies, spa treatments, artwork, fashion items, home décor, oil changes and much, much more.

Tickets are $35 each or $60 per couple. Tickets are available from any Boone Service League member, by visiting http://www.booneserviceleague.org, or by calling (828) 264-9955.

Boone Service League is a group of High Country women whose fundraising efforts help meet many needs on the local level. All funds raised stay in Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties.
