Boone’s first F.A.R.M. Dinning Hall opened last week on King St and seems to have taken off like a rocket.

“Feeding All Regardless of Means” is the motto of the F.A.R.M. cafe, and that’s exactly what they do.

The menu is diverse and changes from day to day.  Most recently, the mashed potatoes, meatloaf, bread pudding and beans were delicious.  The strawberry shortcake dessert was equally good and the salad was fresh.

The way it works is like this:  The daily menu changes, but the quality of food doesn’t and diners can choose the size meal they want, small, medium, large.  Depending on the size you choose, there are suggested donations for your meal.  For example, small might be $2-$4, but you may decide to donate more while others may not have enough and donate less.  For those without anything, they can still eat.  The cafe will feed everyone.  You can volunteer to work in exchange for a meal also.

The concept is amazing and seems to be catching on.  Apparently, there are almost 30 of these across the country.  Boone seems to be happy to have the most recent location as the cafe seems to be filled with people whenever it’s open.  Where else can you go for a home style meal for just a few dollars?  Where else can you go and help feed others?  Where else has this kind of philosophy?

The cafe was the brainchild of a few local people interested in providing good food … to everyone.  The Cafe Mission is “F.A.R.M. Cafe builds a healthy and inclusive community by providing high quality & delicious meals produced from local sources, served in a restaurant where everybody eats, regardless of means.”

If you’re in Boone and looking for a good place to eat, head over to King St (617 King St – Inside Boone Drug) in downtown.  You’ll probably see Renee, Shelly or Andrew behind the counter and you’re sure to enjoy whatever is being served during your visit.  You’re also sure to return.
